Carlos Ortiz made history in his last start. His impressive win at the Houston Open was not only his first career PGA Tour win, but the first PGA Tour win by a Mexican in 42 years.

The 29 year old looked to be on the fast track to greatness in 2014 when he won three Korn Ferry Tour events (then Web.com Tour) to earn a battlefield exemption onto the PGA Tour.

Ortiz had a nice rookie season and advanced to the second round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The former North Texas Mean Green couldn’t keep his card in 2016, missing 19 cuts in 29 starts and recording no top-10s.

It took a couple more seasons on the KFT before he got back to the big leagues. Ortiz started to surge late in 2019 with three top-fives in his last five starts.

It was a quiet 2020 until he came out of nowhere to beat a talented field in Houston.

In a world where instant gratification rules supreme, Ortiz modeled how persistence can pay off

“Mentally, too, I’ve been working really hard on staying positive, patient and don’t let my emotions get the best of me,” Ortiz was transcribed in Houston by Tee Scripts, “and I think I did an amazing job this week.”

Ortiz’ best shot at a win prior to Houston came at the 2019 Mayakoba Golf Classic. Scores of 69-65-65-66 left him just a shot out of a playoff in a tie for second.

The Guadalajara native finished T-9th in 2014 as part of four made cuts in six appearances.
