2020 Mayakoba Golf Classic: Top 10 power rankings at El Camaleon
Daniel Berger’s back at the Mayakoba Golf Classic for the first time since 2014. While we’d like to have him have some course history to work with, the fact that he’s played well enough to build his schedule how he wants and not need a lower tier event like this is a good thing.
In just his sixth career start at the ripe age of 21, Berger fired 65-74-74-67 for T-51st. It was an up and down week, but his play in 2020 has been anything but.
The former Florida State Seminole has been ultra consistent for months now. Berger won the first event of golf’s June resumption at the Charles Schwab Challenge. He nearly won the next week at the Heritage (T-3rd) and contended again at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude (T-2nd).
Berger has just one missed cut since June and otherwise hasn’t finished worse than 34th. He comes to El Camaleon well rested. Berger didn’t qualify for the 2020 Masters and has kept a light schedule with his last event being the Zozo Championship six weeks ago where he was T-17th.
The Floridian was strong throughout the bag last season on the PGA Tour. Berger ranked 34th or better in each strokes gained category. His peak was 17th in SG putting (.526). Berger was also top 50 in driving accuracy, which is key at the Mayakoba.
He sat outside the top 100 in 2018-19 in approach and around the green but made big strides last year. Health problems limited Berger in recent years, but he’s back to reminding us why he was a former Rookie of the Year and can’t miss kid.
