Rickie Fowler had a fine round of golf on Thursday at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Two holes took his round from very good to average.

Rickie Fowler had an adventurous day on Thursday at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Fowler played 16 of the holes in 7-under par. It was the other two holes that cost him what could have been a fantastic round.

Fowler started his round on the back nine and immediately got himself into red figures with a birdie on the par-3 10th hole. He followed that with a birdie on the par-4 11th and he was 2-under par right out of the gate.

But on the 12th hole, he suffered one of his two really bad holes on the day. Playing the par four, Fowler took an eight, a snowman, to go from 2-under par to 2-over par in just one hole.

He immediately bounced back, recording a birdie on the par-5 13th hole to get back to 1-over. But he gave that shot right back with a bogey on the 14th hole, slipping back to 2-over par.

The rest of his first nine was fairly quiet.

Fowler finished par-birdie-par-par to shoot a 1-over par 36. Not bad, considering he was 4-over par on one hole.

As he made the turn, Fowler parred both the first and second holes to stay at 1-over par. However, on the par-4 third hole, the bad play struck again. It wasn’t as bad as it was on his first nine, but Fowler recorded a double bogey, dropping to 3-over par.

But, like he did on his first nine, he bounced right back. Fowler birdied the par-3 fourth hole, then birdied the par-5 fifth hole. With that, he was back to 1-over on his round.

Fowler would par the sixth and seventh holes before a strong finish. He birdied the par-3 eighth hole, then closed with a birdie on the par-4 ninth. That allowed him to finish with a 1-under round of 70.

However, it certainly could have been much better. Fowler had eight birdies on the day to go with a bogey, a double bogey and the quadruple bogey. If not for those bad holes, Fowler might be near the top of the leaderboard. Instead, he will be near the cut line when Friday’s round begins.
