Andy Ogletree has had quite a last few weeks. That includes being the low amateur at the Masters and now competing at the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

It’s been an interesting last month for Andy Ogletree. And it got a lot more interesting when he played himself into contention at the Mayakoba Golf Classic on Friday.

Ogletree started his whirlwind adventure by playing in the Masters in November. One of his playing partners for the first two days was none other than Tiger Woods.

He did very well for himself in his first career major. Ogletree ended up as the low amateur at the Masters and was recognized in Butler Cabin along with winner Dustin Johnson.

Shortly after the Masters, Ogletree, who played his college golf at Georgia Tech, decided to turn pro at the age of 22. With the promise his game has already shown, it seemed like the absolute right decision.

Ogletree shot a 2-under par 69 on Thursday to get his week in Mexico started. That round left him in a tie for 20th place after one round.

On Friday, Ogletree started his round with pars on the first and second holes. Then, he really got things rolling.

Ogeltree birdied the par-4 third hole. Then he birdied the par-3 fourth hole. Then he birdied the par-5 fifth hole. Suddenly, he was 3-under par on his round.

After a par on the sixth hole, Ogletree birdied the par-5 seventh hole to move to 4-under par. He would par the eighth and ninth holes to finish his first nine with a 4-under par 32.

Ogletree parred the 10th hole before a birdie on the 11th hole got him to 5-under par on his round. He would slip back with a bogey on the par-4 12th hole.

But Ogletree showed the savvy that only veterans usually possess. Rather than let his round get away from him after the bogey, he stepped right back up.

That came in the form of a birdie on the par-5 13th hole. That got him back to 5-under par on his round.

Ogletree would par the 14th and 15th holes before the final round was called due to darkness. When he resumes his round on Saturday morning, he has three holes to play. If he’s able to make a couple of bogeys, he could jump right into contention in this week’s PGA Tour event.

That would be quite an accomplishment, and it would add to the magical few weeks that Ogletree has experienced recently. Getting his first career win would be the icing on the cake.
