Mayakoba Golf Classic: Justin Thomas Catches Fire on Saturday
By Tim Letcher
Justin Thomas vaulted into contention with a 62 on Saturday at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. He now has a chance to win on Sunday.
Justin Thomas was the favorite when the week started at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. However, through his first two round, Thomas had not really done anything to look like the best player in the field.
He opened with a 1-over par round of 72 on Thursday. On Friday, he needed to do something more than that to make the cut. He did so, shooting a 4-under par round of 67 to jump into a tie for 33rd place heading to the weekend.

Then on Saturday, Thomas finally showed what everyone expected to see from him this week. And in doing so, he vaulted into contention.
Playing the back nine first, Thomas would par the 10th hole before a birdie on the 11th hole to get into red figures. He parred the 12th hole to remain at 1-under on his round.
On the 13th hole, a par five, Thomas recorded another birdie. He followed that with a birdie on the par-4 14th hole to get to three under par.
Thomas would par both the 15th and 16th holes before another birdie, this one at the 17th hole. At that point, he was 4-under par on his round. That’s where he finished his first nine, with a 4-under par 31.
On his second nine, Thomas would really get going.
Thomas started his second nine with pars on the first and second holes. But after that, the round got better and better with each hole.
It started with a birdie on the par-4 third hole, moving him to 5-under par. Thomas followed that with a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole. Then he birdied the par-5 fifth hole to get to 7-under par.
After a par on the sixth hole, Thomas was at it again on the seventh. He birdied the par five to get to 8-under par. He followed that with a birdie on the par-3 eighth hole, moving to 9-under in the process.
Thomas finished with a 9-under par 62 and moved from 33rd into a tie for fifth with 18 holes remaining. He trails Emiliano Grillo by four shots with 18 holes to play.
If Thomas can play like the best player in the field again on Sunday, he could rally to win at Mayakoba. And that would be the result that may of us expected at the beginning of the week.
