By Tim Letcher
Find out who the winners and losers were from this week’s Mayakoba Golf Classic, including Viktor Hovland, Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler.
Each week on the PGA Tour, there are those who do better than expected and those who fall short of expectations. Here are Pro Golf Now, we call them winners and losers. Here are this week’s winners and losers from the Mayakoba Golf Classic.
Winners
Viktor Hovland – As he did in his first career win on the PGA Tour win, Hovland birdied the 72nd hole to claim the title. Still just 23 years old, the future is very, very bright for Hovland, who has a solid all-around game.

Aaron Wise – Although he came up just short, it was a very good week for Wise. He shot 63 on Sunday and finished one shot behind Hovland. Still, it was an 62-spot jump in the FedEx Cup standings for Wise, who is now 19th.
Max Homa – One of the best Twitter follows on the PGA Tour had a big weekend in Mexico. Homa shot 65-65 to jump into a tie for 12th place. A good showing for Homa, who also moved up 59 spots in the FedEx Cup standings.
Tom Hoge – It was a solid week for Hoge, who shot 66-67-65-69 to finish in a tie for third place. By doing so, Hoge jumped 54 spots in the FedEx Cup standings and into 38th place.
Joaquin Niemann – He finished in a tie for 23rd place this week and will donate all of his winnings to his ill infant cousin. That’s a win in our book.
Losers
Brooks Koepka – The four-time major winner had been hot to start the 2020-21 PGA Tour season, but he fell short this week in Mexico. Koepka shot 71-71 to miss the cut by a shot in a field where he was considered to be one of the favorites.
Rickie Fowler – Another of the players who should have contended this week, Fowler instead shot a wild 70 on Thursday, then followed that with a 72 on Friday to miss the cut by a shot.
Emiliano Grillo – He entered the weekend with a four-shot lead but was unable to get his second career PGA Tour win. Grillo shot 68 on Saturday, but slipped to a 72 on Sunday and finished in a tie for eighth.
Beau Hossler – It’s not the Hossler missed the cut this week in Mexico, it’s that he missed the cut by 13 shots. He shot 76-78 and finished in last place. That’s three straight missed cuts for Hossler after starting the season well.
Marc Leishman – It just wasn’t Leishman’s week in Mexico. He shot 74-77 to finish 9-over par, missing the cut by 10 shots. This is an event where the Australian should have fared much better than he did.
