Viktor Hovland makes his DP World Tour Championship coming off of the second PGA Tour victory of the young Norwegian’s career.

Rounds of 67-69 kept the 23 year old in the mix going into the weekend at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Then Hovland turned on the jets.

The former U.S. Amateur champion closed in 63-65 and made birdie on the 72nd hole to avoid a playoff with Aaron Wise. It was an absolute stripe show all week for Hovland. He hit a whopping 84.72% greens in regulation to lead the field.

This was the site of his first PGA Tour event as an amateur in 2018. He missed the cut. Hovland came back for another MC in 2019.

Now, he’s got another trophy to go alongside his 2020 Puerto Rico Open title.

Hovland had been a top-25 machine since golf resumed in June, but the top-10s weren’t quite coming. He believed he was making good strides during quarantine that finally paid off in the last event of the year.

“Luckily, at Oklahoma we didn’t close down any golf courses, I was able to practice at Carson, and my roommates and the guys on the Oklahoma State golf team were able to play almost every day,” Hovland was transcribed by Tee Scripts. “So it was like, you know, COVID wasn’t really affecting us that much. I felt like I was able to make some good gains in my golf game during that period.”

Hovland is no stranger to golf in Dubai. He finished T-23rd early in 2020 at the Dubai Desert Classic. Also on the European Tour the young star took T-11th at the 2019 BMW PGA Championship.

Making the trip across the globe on a tournament invitation is a tough ask, but I still like Hovland to grind out another high finish.
