Bubba Watson has come close to winning the FedEx Cup in the past. But is he a contender or a pretender for the 2021 FedEx Cup?

With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 49, Bubba Watson.

Best career FedEx Cup finish: Watson has nearly won the FedEx Cup twice during his career. In 2014, Watson had a pair of PGA Tour wins, along with three runner-up finishes, on his way to a fifth-place finish in the FedEx Cup. The following season was nearly a repeat, with two wins, three seconds and a fifth-place finish in the postseason.

So far this season: The 2020-21 season has gone well for Watson so far, even with a limited number of starts. Watson opened the campaign at the U.S. Open, where he shot 72-69 on the first two days to put himself into contention. However, he followed that with a 74 on Saturday and a 77 on Sunday to finish 12-over par and in a tie for 31st place.

After a few weeks off, Watson returned at the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas. He opened with a 74, but followed that with a 69 on Friday, a 65 on Saturday and a 68 on Sunday. That added up to a 12-under par finish and a tie for seventh place.

The following week, Watson had a similar experience.

At the Zozo Championship, Watson had a 70 in the first round. However, he followed that with a 63 in the second round to get back into contention. He shot 68-68 on the weekend to finish in a tie for fourth place.

His final official start of 2020 was at the Masters, where he has won twice before. However, a bad first round took him out of the hunt again this week. His 74 didn’t do him in but his 78 on Sunday did. Watson finished 57th at Augusta National.

The verdict: Watson will have another shot at the Masters in April and at the Travelers Championship, where he has won three times. But in order to get into contention for the FedEx Cup, he will need to win at both of those stops. That doesn’t seem likely, so, at this point, Watson is a pretender.
