Sebastian Munoz: 2021 FedEx Cup Contender or Pretender?
By Tim Letcher
Sebastian Munoz had a surprise Top 10 finish in last year’s FedEx Cup standings. Could he repeat that feat again this year?
With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 46, Sebastian Munoz.
Best career FedEx Cup finish: Munoz has played two full seasons on the PGA Tour with totally different results in the postseason. In his rookie season, Munoz made the postseason but finished 117th in the FedEx Cup standings. But last season, Munoz earned his first career victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship and held the early FedEx Cup lead. He ultimately finished eighth for the year.

So far this season: Munoz has played in eight events so far this season with varying results. His season opened at the U.S. Open, where he shot a 71 on Thursday, followed by a 74 on Friday. He was within striking distance until he shot 77 on Saturday and 82 on Sunday. His 24-over par score left him in a tie for 59th place.
Two weeks later, Munoz started the Sanderson Farms Championship with a sparkling 64. However, he went 73-70-71 after that to finish in a tie for 23rd place.
He followed that with a tie for 27th at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. That week, he was very consistent, shooting 68-67-68-67.
Munoz had his best result of the season the following week.
Still in Las Vegas, and facing a tough field, Munoz was up to the task. At the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek, Munoz rallied on the weekend with a 67-69 finish to earn a ninth-place showing.
He followed that with a tie for 14th at the Zozo Championship at Sherwood Country Club. After a couple of weeks off, Munoz finished T19 at the Masters.
However, he has not played well since then. At the RSM Classic, he shot 76-73 to miss the cut. Then, at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, Munoz shot 73-70 for another missed cut. Not the best way to end the season.
The verdict: Munoz got off to a fast start last season on his way to eighth in the FedEx Cup standings. He will need a big rally to get back to the Tour Championship and that doesn’t appear likely at this point. Consider him a pretender for the 2021 FedEx Cup.
