J.T. Poston: 2021 FedEx Cup Contender or Pretender?
By Tim Letcher
During his four seasons on the PGA Tour, J.T. Poston has never really made a run at the FedEx Cup. Can this be the season he does?
With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 44, J.T. Poston.
Best career FedEx Cup finish: Poston has played four full years on the PGA Tour. His best season in the playoffs came in 2019 when he was 32nd in the FedEx Cup playoffs. That was also the season he earned his first, and at this point his only, PGA Tour win at the Wyndham Championship.

So far this season: The 2020-21 season has not been kind to Poston, with one notable exception. And it’s that exception that has kept him anywhere near being in the hunt.
Poston started his season at the U.S. Open. Things did not start too badly for him, as he shot a 71 on Thursday. But it got really bad really quickly on Friday, when Poston slipped to an 82 and ultimately missed the cut.
But, two weeks later, Poston had a very nice week at the Sanderson Farms Championship. He was in the mix with 18 holes to play before falling to Sergio Garcia in the final round. But Poston was able to place in third by himself which, at the time, put him in 10th in the FedEx Cup standings.
However, things have not gone great for Poston since then.
After the Sanderson Farms Championship, Poston played both of the Las Vegas events. He would finish in a tie for 27th at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, but it could have been better if not for a 71 on Sunday. The following week, an opening round 78 took him out of contention early at the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek. By the time Sunday came to a close, Poston was in 51st place.
He tied for 20th at the Houston Open, but then missed the cut in his last two starts. He shot 73-75 to miss the weekend at the Masters. Then, he shot 71-69 to miss the cut at the RSM Classic.
The verdict: Poston will have to show a lot more consistency in his game before he is ready to compete for the FedEx Cup. Consider him a pretender in this year’s postseason.
