So far this season: Simpson opened his 2020-21 campaign at the U.S. Open, where he hung around all week long. The 35-year-old shot 71-71-71 the first three days at Winged Foot to enter the final round at 3-over par. However, a final-round 73 took Simpson out of contention and left him in a tie for eighth place.
Two weeks later, Simpson was back on the course, this time at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. It was a solid week for Simpson, who had a 68 on Thursday, followed by a 67 on Friday. The veteran shot 65 on Saturday and 67 on Sunday to shoot 17-under par and finish in a tie for 13th place.
Simpson found himself in the mix at the Zozo Championship two weeks later. He shot a 69 on Thursday, followed by a 65 on Friday. Simpson stayed in the mix with a 67 on Saturday but he dropped back in the pack after shooting 72 on Sunday. He finished in a tie for 17th overall.
The next week, Simpson was considered one of the players who had a real shot to win the Masters.
He opened with a 67 at Augusta National to put himself in contention. But his 73 on Friday hurt his chances. Simpson shot 71 on Saturday and 68 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 10th place.
His last start of 2020 was at the RSM Classic, where Simpson finished in a tie for 37th place. He climbed several spots with a 66 on Sunday.
The verdict: Simpson is just a notch behind the world’s best players. He could certainly get hot and earn a couple of wins, followed by a win in the playoffs that could earn him a FedEx Cup. Consider Simpson a contender for the 2021 FedEx Cup.
