Tom Hoge: 2021 FedEx Cup Contender or Pretender?
By Tim Letcher
Tom Hoge continues to improve each season he plays on the PGA Tour. Can he compete for the 2021 FedEx Cup or is it still too soon?
With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 38, Tom Hoge.
Best career FedEx Cup finish: Hoge is in his seventh year on the PGA Tour and he continues his gradual ascent up the FedEx Cup standings. His best finish came last year, when he rode the momentum of a second-place finish at the Military Tribute at the Greenbrier to a 50th-place showing in the final FedEx Cup standings.

So far this season: Hoge continues to be a grinder on the PGA Tour. He loves to play and he plays often. He has already made eight starts this season, starting with the Safeway Open in September, where he finished in a tie for 29th place.
Hoge returned a couple of weeks later at the Sanderson Farms Championship, where he was able to shoot 9-under for the week. That was good for a tie for 28th place.
In his second of four straight weeks of playing, Hoge had a poor start and a poor finish at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. But his Friday 64 and Saturday 66 lifted him into a tie for 24th place.
Staying in Las Vegas, Hoge played the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek. There, he rallied with a 68 on Sunday to climb into a tie for 38th place.
In his fourth start in four weeks, Hoge tied for 47th at the Zozo Championship.
After taking a week off, he missed the cut at the Houston Open. Two weeks later, he missed the cut at the RSM Classic.
In his final start of the 2020 calendar year, Hoge had his best finish of the season so far. In fact, he was in the hunt for his first PGA Tour win at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. But a 69 on Sunday dropped him into a tie for third place.
The verdict: Hoge has never won on tour, meaning he’s not likely to win the FedEx Cup. Consider him a pretender at this time.
