Tony Finau: 2021 FedEx Cup Contender or Pretender?
By Tim Letcher
Tony Finau seems to be one of those players who is always in contention on the PGA Tour. Can he take that next step and win the FedEx Cup?
With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 40, Tony Finau.
Best career FedEx Cup finish: Finau has made a couple of runs at the FedEx Cup title. During his streak of four consecutive Top 20 postseason finishes, Finau got especially close to the title in 2018, when he finished in sixth place, his career best. The following season, he was seventh. He did not have a win on tour in either of those seasons.

So far this season: It’s been a very solid start to the 2020-21 season for Finau. He opened the season by hanging around at the U.S. Open, ultimately finishing in a tie for eighth place after a 71 on Sunday.
After taking about a month off, Finau returned at the Zozo Championship, where his week was highlighted by a second-round 64. He paired that with three rounds of 69 to finish at 17-under par, which was good enough to tie him for 11th place.
Finau took a week off before playing at the Houston Open. There, he finished in a tie for 24th place overall.
Heading into the Masters, Finau was considered among those who could win at Augusta National.
He started his Masters week with a 69. However, rounds of 75, 71 and 72 left him well out of contention and in a tie for 38th place.
However, in his last start of 2020, Finau surged with a fine finish. It started at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, where he was consistent all week. He ended up finishing in a tie for eighth place there.
The verdict: It’s hard to believe that Finau has only one win during his PGA Tour career. That came in 2016 at the Puerto Rico Open. In order to win the FedEx Cup, Finau needs to win. He has the talent but until he proves that he can do it, he’s a pretender.
