Abraham Ancer is a rising star on the PGA Tour. He has shown a big game during his four years on tour. Is he ready for a run at the FedEx Cup?

With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 31, Abraham Ancer.

Best career FedEx Cup finish: Ancer first played on the PGA Tour for one season, 2016, and he did not make the FedEx Cup playoffs, finishing 190th. Upon his return, Ancer has started his steady climb up the FedEx Cup standings each season. He was 60th in 2018 and 21st in 2019. However, his best season came last year, when he made his second trip to East Lake and the Tour Championship and finished 18th.

So far this season: Ancer started his season at the U.S. Open. He shot 71 the first day and 75 on Friday to make the cut. However, a 79 on Saturday put him well off the pace. He ended up in a tie for 56th place.

In October, Ancer had a very nice bounce back from his U.S. Open disappointment. Playing at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas, Ancer went 66-66-65-67 to finish at 20-under par. That was good enough for a solo fourth, his best finish so far this season.

Ancer would continue his solid play the following week at the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek. If not for a second-round 73, he might have placed higher than he did, when he finished in a tie for 28th.

At the Zozo Championship, Ancer was very good for three rounds. He had rounds of 67, 66 and 66. But a third-round 77 took him out of the mix and dropped him into a tie for 35th on the week.

Ancer still had two starts left at that point in the season, including a trip to the Masters.

At Augusta National, Ancer again had three very good rounds of golf. He opened with a 68 on Thursday and followed that with a 67 on Friday. He was 9-under through 36 holes and in a five-way tie for the lead. After a 69 on Saturday, Ancer was tied for second with 18 holes left. But his final-round 76 dropped him into a tie for 13th.

His final start of 2020 came at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. There, Ancer tied for 12th.

The verdict: Ancer is a rising star on the PGA Tour. His talent is nearly as good as anyone, he just needs experience to go with it. If everything fell into place, Ancer could win the FedEx Cup. We’ll call him a contender in 2021.
