Corey Conners continues to make strides on the PGA Tour. But is he ready to take that next big step and compete for the FedEx Cup?

With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 27, Corey Conners.

Best career FedEx Cup finish: Conners has played three full seasons on the PGA Tour. He missed the FedEx Cup playoffs the first season but then had a nice 2019, when he made it to East Lake for the Tour Championship for the first time. Conners would finish 26th in the final standings. Last year, he slipped back to 53rd in those same standings.

So far this season: Conners has already played in nine events during the 2020-21 season. Things did not start well for Conners, who shot 71-76 at the U.S. Open to miss the cut. He followed that by shooting 70-76 at the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship to miss the cut there as well.

However, Conners has a nice bounce back at the Sanderson Farms Championship. He shot 67 on Thursday and 69 on Saturday on his way to a tie for 17th place.

At the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek, an opening 77 took Conners out of contention. He shot four rounds in the 70s and finished in a tie for 61st place.

Conners had his best outing of the season at the Zozo Championship. He went 69-67-68-66 to finish 18-under par and in a tie for eighth place in a very solid field.

After a week off, the Canadian finished in a tie for 24th at the Houston Open. It was a week that could have been better if not for a 73 on Saturday.

The following week, Conners made his third career appearance in the Masters. And it was his best by far.

Things did not start well at Augusta National for Conners, as he shot 74 in the first round. But a 65 in the second round got him to 5-under through 36 holes and within shouting distance of the lead. Conners shot 71 on Saturday and 69 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 10th, the best finish he’s ever had in any major.

That seemed to give Conners some confidence as he closed 2020. He tied for 10th at the RSM Classic, then tied for 17th at the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

The verdict: Conners continues to show a ton of promise and is proving how good he really is. But with just one PGA Tour win under his belt, he’s still a pretender for the 2021 FedEx Cup.
