Adam Long: 2021 FedEx Cup Contender or Pretender?
By Tim Letcher
Adam Long has had a solid start to the 2020-21 season. Can that carry over and allow him to compete for the 2021 FedEx Cup?
With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 21, Adam Long.
Best career FedEx Cup finish: Long has played on the PGA Tour for just two seasons. His rookie season, in 2019, saw him finish in 69th place in the FedEx Cup standings. Then last year, he took the next step forward, finishing in 31st place in the final standings and just missing his first trip to East Lake for the Tour Championship.

So far this season: It has been a very solid start to the 2020-21 season for Long. The Duke University grad opened his season with an impressive showing at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot. There, he shot 71 on Thursday and 74 on Friday. He would come back with a 69 on Saturday and would shoot a 73 on Sunday. That left him at 7-over par and in a tie for 13th place.
He kept the hot streak going the next week at the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship. Long held the lead through 54 holes and appeared to be on his way to his second PGA Tour victory. But a 75 in the final round left him in fifth place.
Long then experienced a bit of a cold streak. He missed the cut at the Sanderson Farms Championship, then was 74th at the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek, where he shot 78 in the first and last rounds. The next week, at the Zozo Championship, Long shot 77-72 to start, but finished with rounds of 66 and 69 to finish in a tie for 66th place.
Long would make three more starts and would make the most of them.
At the Houston Open, Long shot three rounds in the 60s on his way to a 6-under total. That left him in a tie for 11th place.
Two weeks later, at the RSM Classic, Long shot four rounds in the 60s and was 10-under for the week. That left him in a tie for 30th place overall.
Long’s final start of the 2020 calendar year was another good one. He shot 70-67 to start, but jumped up the leader board with a 63 on Saturday. He closed with a 67 on Sunday to finish in a tie for third place.
The verdict: Long is not there at this point and, at 33 years of age, he might never be. Consider him a pretender for the 2021 FedEx Cup.
