Jon Rahm: 2021 FedEx Cup Contender or Pretender?
By Tim Letcher
Jon Rahm is the second-ranked player in the world and a threat every time he tees it up. Is 2021 his year to win the FedEx Cup?
With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 22, Jon Rahm.
Best career FedEx Cup finish: Rahm has played four seasons on the PGA Tour and has made a run at the FedEx Cup in each of those seasons. His rookie year, in 2017, he finished fifth. He followed that with a 23rd-place showing in 2018 and a 12th place in 2019. However, his best showing in the postseason last year, when he finished fourth in the final FedEx Cup standings.

So far this season: Rahm is one of the best players in the world and he has played that way so far this season. Rahm has made just four starts but has made the most of his limited opportunities.
His season started at the U.S. Open. He shot a 69 on Thursday at Winged Foot, followed by a 72 on Friday. However, he took himself out of the running with a 76 on Saturday. He closed with a 73 on Sunday. That left him at 10-over par and in a tie for 23rd place.
After a few weeks off, Rahm returned to action at the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek. He opened that event with a 67 on Thursday, then followed that with a 73 on Friday. He came back with a 69 on Saturday and a 72 on Sunday. In total, he was 7-under par and tied for 17th place.
His last two events were much better.
At the Zozo Championship at Sherwood Country Club, Rahm shot 68 on Thursday and 67 on Friday. But a 63 on Saturday got him near the lead. However, his 68 on Sunday left him one shot shy of winner Patrick Cantlay.
Rahm’s final start of 2020 came at the Masters. There, he shot 69 on Thursday and 66 on Friday to put himself firmly in the mix heading to the weekend. But a 72 on Saturday and a 71 on Sunday left him in a tie for seventh and still in search of his first major title.
The verdict: Rahm can, and will, win the FedEx Cup at some point. It could definitely be this year. Consider him a contender.
