Tyler McCumber: 2021 FedEx Cup Contender or Pretender?
By Tim Letcher
Tyler McCumber has had an amazingly inconsistent start to the 2020-21 PGA Tour season. Is there any way he can win the FedEx Cup?
With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 25, Tyler McCumber.
Best career FedEx Cup finish: McCumber has played just one season on the PGA Tour, which was the 2019-20 season. He had two Top 25 finishes in 20 starts and finished 161st in the FedEx Cup standings, missing the playoffs following his rookie season.

So far this season: The 2020-21 season has been a wild one for McCumber so far. He has played in just six events, with vastly different results each time he tees it up.
McCumber started his season at the Safeway Open, where he shot 73-71. That was not enough to make the cut, and McCumber was home for the weekend.
Two weeks later, at the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship, McCumber had a much different result. He opened with a 65 on Thursday, followed by a 71 on Friday. On the weekend, McCumber shot 69-66 to finish one shot behind Hudson Swafford. Still, it was a solo second for McCumber, marking the best finish in his PGA Tour career.
The momentum carried over for McCumber as he played the Sanderson Farms Championship. He opened with a 70, then shot 69-66-69 to finish 14-under par. That was good enough to tie him for sixth place. The only two Top 10s of his career came in consecutive weeks.
McCumber was unable to keep his hot streak going. In fact, things went in exactly the opposite direction.
At the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, he shot 74-71 to miss the cut. After taking a few weeks off, McCumber shot 68-77 to miss the cut at the Bermuda Championship.
In his final start of the season, McCumber hoped to recapture some of his magic. Instead, he shot 75-73 at the RSM Classic and missed another cut. So, in six events in the fall, McCumber had four missed cuts and two Top 10s. Crazy.
The verdict: With inconsistent play like he has shown so far this season, there’s no way McCumber can contend for the FedEx Cup at this time. Consider him a pretender.
