Wyndham Clark: 2021 FedEx Cup Contender or Pretender?
By Tim Letcher
Wyndham Clark has started the 2020-21 PGA Tour season very well. But can he really be a contender for the 2021 FedEx Cup?
With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 24, Wyndham Clark.
Best career FedEx Cup finish: Clark has played just two years on the PGA Tour. Following his rookie year, in 2019, Clark finished in 64th place. Last season, he slipped back a bit, still making it to the playoffs but finishing only 110th in the postseason.

So far this season: It’s been a mixed bag of results for Clark so far this season. One big result has him this far up in the FedEx Cup standings.
The 2020-21 campaign opened for Clark at the Safeway Open. There, he shot 69-73 and missed the cut. Not a good start to the new season.
Three weeks later, Clark returned to action at the Sanderson Farms Championship. There, he played fairly well for three days before a dreadful 78 in the final round dropped him into 66th place.
The following week, Clark had things trending more in the right direction. At the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, he opened with a 67 and followed that with a 63 on Friday. After a 65 on Saturday, Clark was poised to make a run on Sunday. But a final round of 72 left him in a tie for 13th place.
In November, Clark had his best showing of the season.
Playing at the Bermuda Championship, Clark opened with a 66 on Thursday and followed that with a 68 on Friday. He shot a 70 on Saturday and was within striking distance on Sunday. A final round of 65 left him tied with Brian Gay after 72 holes.
On the first playoff hole, it was Gay who recorded a birdie, keeping Clark from winning on the PGA Tour for the first time. Still, it was a solo second place showing, the best of Clark’s career.
Clark finished the 2020 calendar year with a missed cut at the Houston Open and a tie for 23rd at the RSM Classic.
The verdict: Clark has only finished in the top three in a PGA Tour event once, and that happened earlier this year. At this point, consider him a pretender for the 2021 FedEx Cup.
