Hudson Swafford earned the second PGA Tour victory of his career earlier this season. Can he use that as momentum for the 2021 FedEx Cup?

With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 14, Hudson Swafford.

Best career FedEx Cup finish: Swafford has played on the PGA Tour since 2014 but has not had a lot of success in the postseason. In fact, he has made the FedEx Cup playoffs just three times, which came in 2015, 2016 and 2017. His best playoff finish came in 2017, the year he got his first career win, at the Career Builder Challenge. He would end up 38th in the FedEx Cup standings at the end of that season.

So far this season: Much like Brian Gay, Swafford has been nearly all or nothing in his seven starts so far this season. He began his season at the Safeway Open, where he shot 70-68 to make the cut. However, he shot 72 on Saturday and 71 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 56th place.

Two weeks later, Swafford shocked the entire field, and perhaps himself, at the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship. He shot a 65 in the first round and followed that with a 67 to grab the 36-hole lead.

Swafford shot 69 on Saturday and trailed Adam Long by two shots heading into the final round. But Swafford’s steady 69 was enough to hold off Tyler McCumber and earn Swafford his second PGA Tour victory.

Since the win, things have not gone nearly as well for Swafford.

He played the Sanderson Farms Championship in October. There, he shot 75-71 and missed the cut.

He then played the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. He shot 75-71 (again) and missed the cut.

He did make the cut at the Bermuda Championship. But a 76 on Sunday dropped him into a tie for 63rd place for the week.

At the Houston Open, Swafford missed another cut. And he followed that with a missed cut at the RSM Classic.

The verdict: Swafford earned a win earlier this season and that’s why he’s this high in the points standing right now. He’s a total pretender for the 2021 FedEx Cup.
