So far this season: Thomas is a threat to win every time he tees it up on the PGA Tour. With 13 wins so far in his career, he has proven that he’s among the game’s best.
His 2020-21 season started at the U.S. Open. There, he fired a record-tying 65 on Thursday to take the first round lead. He followed that with a 73 on Friday. But it was the Saturday round, a 76, that cost him. He finished with a 72 and the result was a tie for eighth place overall.
After three weeks off, Thomas returned to play at the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek. He opened with a 72, but came back with a 66 on Friday. A 68 on Saturday put him in contention but a 74 on Sunday left him in a tie for 12th place.
At the Zozo Championship the following week, Thomas shot 65 on both Thursday and Friday to grab the lead. He held the lead through three rounds after shooting 67 on Saturday. But a 69 on Sunday left him in a tie for second, one shot short of winner Patrick Cantlay.
Heading into the Masters, Thomas was seen as one of the favorites. And things started off very well for him.
He shot 66 on Saturday to sit one shot behind the lead after 18 holes. A 69 on Friday earned him a tie for the lead through 36 holes.
However, he slipped to a 71 on Saturday and into sixth place. Thomas shot 70 on Sunday to end up in solo fourth for the week.
In his final outing of the season, Thomas played at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. He opened with a 72 and followed that with a 67. He climbed the leader board on Saturday with a 62, but he shot 69 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 12th.
The verdict: Thomas has proven that he can win any event, including the FedEx Cup. He’s not only a contender for the 2021 Cup, he’s one of the favorites.
