Sergio Garcia got back into the win column on the PGA Tour in 2020. Can he ride that momentum and have a chance to win the FedEx Cup in 2021?

With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 10, Sergio Garcia.

Best career FedEx Cup finish: Garcia is playing his 21st season on the PGA Tour this year. That means he has spent more than half of his life on the tour. Garcia has made a couple of serious runs at the FedEx Cup, but not in a while. His best finish came in 2008 when he was third. The year prior to that, he finished ninth. But in the last 10 years, his best finish came in 2014 when he finished 13th. Overall, he has played in the Tour Championship six times.

So far this season: Garcia’s 2020-21 season started slowly, but quickly picked up. His first event of the 2020-21 campaign was at the Safeway Open, where he shot 72-69 and missed the cut.

The next week, Garcia played the U.S. Open. He opened with a respectable 74 in the first round. But on Friday, he ballooned to an 81 and he missed the cut.

After a week off, Garcia returned to action at the Sanderson Farms Championship. And it was like he turned back the clock.

He opened the event with a 68 on Thursday, then had another 68 on Friday. Still, Garcia had ground to make up with 36 holes to play.

On Saturday, the Spaniard made his move, shooting 66 on a fairly difficult day for scoring. That allowed him to take the lead with 18 holes to play. On Sunday, Garcia shot 67 but he needed a birdie on 18 to break his three-year drought on the PGA Tour. The win was Garcia’s 11th of his PGA Tour career.

Garcia rode that momentum into the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open the following week. He opened with a 66 and followed that with a 64 to put himself into contention for a second straight week. Garcia shot 69 on Saturday but slipped back with a 73 on Sunday to tie for 43rd place.

Garcia also played well at the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek. He shot 71-70-72-69 to finish in a tie for 21st place.

There were two more events, at least, on Garcia’s schedule for 2020 at that point. However, he went to the Houston Open and shot 74-71 to miss the cut. During that event, he wasn’t feeling great, so he was tested for COVID-19 and the test came back positive. That forced Garcia to withdraw from the Masters, ending his streak of major championship starts.

The verdict: Love him or hate him, Garcia still has some game left in him. He would need to play really well, especially in majors, to make it happen, but he’s a contender for the 2021 FedEx Cup.
