Stewart Cink: 2021 FedEx Cup Contender or Pretender?
By Tim Letcher
Stewart Cink had a fine fall and the 47-year-old is currently fourth in the FedEx Cup standings. Can he make a postseason run in 2021?
With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 4, Stewart Cink.
Best career FedEx Cup finish: Cink has made three trips to East Lake for the Tour Championship. In 2008, he finished a career-high 20th in the FedEx Cup standings. He was 22nd in 2007 and 28th in 2009.

So far this season: Cink got his 2020-21 season started in the best way possible. Playing at the Safeway Open, Cink opened with a 67 on Thursday and followed that with a 70 on Friday. Nothing spectacular through two days, but enough to keep him in the mix.
Then on the weekend, the veteran stepped up his game. With his son caddying for him, Cink shot a 65 on Saturday to jump into seventh place. Then on Sunday, the 47-year-old Cink shot another 65 to earn his seventh career PGA Tour win and his first since winning the Open Championship in 2009.
The hot streak to start the season continued at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi. Cink shot 69-69 to start and had a 72 on Saturday. He then fired another final-round 65 to jump from 31st into a tie for 12th place.
Cink played the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open the next week and he had a strong start. Cink shot a 67 on Thursday and a 63 on Friday. He was in contention until he shot 70 on Saturday and a whopping 81 on Sunday, including a Tin Cup moment. He fell 33 spots on Sunday and ended up in a tie for 64th.
At the Bermuda Championship, Cink was hot again.
He shot a 66 in the first round and followed that with a 74 on Friday. However, he bounced back in a big way. Cink shot 68 on Saturday then shot a 64 on Sunday. He jumped 11 spots on Sunday to end up in a tie for fourth place.
Cink’s last two starts in 2020 were not nearly as good. At the Houston Open, he shot 72-74 and missed the cut. Then at the RSM Classic, Cink shot 74-70 to also miss the cut.
The verdict: It’s been good to see Cink recapture the magic this fall, but he’s not likely to contend for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Consider him a pretender.
