The Sentry Tournament of Champions: Who’s hot?
By Bill Felber
So you’re saying there’s a chance
- Collin Morikawa, 1.06
- Mackenzie Hughes, 0.98
- Robert Streb, 0.94
- Brendon Todd, 0.77
- Lanto Griffin, 0.77
- Cameron Champ, 0.63
- Ryan Palmer, 0.56
- Stewart Cink, 0.56
- Kevin Na, 0.54
- Sebastian Munoz, 0.43
As the reigning PGA champion, a title he won at Harding Park in August, Morikawa certainly had a good 2020. His seasonal winnings surpassed $5 million.
But the 2020-21 season has been substantially less rewarding. ‘Hot’ is not a word that would be used to describe his recent play. Morikawa’s five recent starts include two missed cuts and only one finish higher than t44, a tie for 12th in the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek. It’s still early but that $5 million windfall Morikawa made last season totals less than a quarter-million so far this season.
Na, Palmer, Champ and Griffin all missed cuts at either the Open or Masters. Champ’s season has been especially uneven; he followed missed cuts at the Open and Shriners with a top 10 at the Zozo and top 20 at the Masters.
Had the Sentry been played in October, Munoz might have been a favorite. He was hot then, following a ninth at the CJ Cup with a tie for 14th at the Zozo, then was top 20 at Augusta. Since then, Munoz has been awful: He shot 76-73 to miss the cut at the RSM and followed that with 73-70 and a missed cut at Mayakoba.
