Tiger Week: Tournaments That Tiger Woods Has Dominated
By Tim Letcher
The Masters
Only one player in history has won the Masters more than Tiger Woods, and his name is Jack Nicklaus. The Golden Bear claimed the green jacket six times during his Hall of Fame career.
Woods has won the Masters five times in his career, setting records and making history along the way.
Tiger’s first triumph at Augusta National came in 1997. It was his fourth PGA Tour win, and first major championship, and he did it in record-breaking fashion. Woods set the scoring record at the Masters, shooting 18-under par (a record that Dustin Johnson broke in 2020). He also set the record for margin of victory, beating Tom Kite by 12 shots.
It would be four more years before Woods would claim his second green jacket, but he did so in 2001, when he shot 16-under par to beat David Duval by two shots. The win also clinched the “Tiger Slam”, where Woods won all four majors in a row, just not in the same year.
He didn’t take nearly as long to win at the Masters again this time. In fact, it was the very next year, in 2002, when Woods claimed his third green jacket. He won the event by three shots over Retief Goosen.
Woods won his fourth Masters in 2005, one that is remembered for the amazing chip-in he had on the 16th hole on Sunday. Tiger beat Chris DiMarco in a playoff to win the title.
And, of course, Woods would have to wait 14 years before winning the Masters again, and he did so in 2019 by holding off Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele by one shot.
