Phil Mickelson

Many would have expected that Lefty would have been first on this list, but two players have been runner-up to Woods more times. Mickelson has been second to Woods on four occasions during his Hall of Fame career.

The first time came at the 1999 WGC-NEC Invitational which, as we have already documented, is one of the sites where Woods has won eight times. This happened to be Tiger’s first win at Firestone and Mickelson was the runner-up, one shot behind.

In the 2001 Bay Hill Invitational, the tournament came down to Tiger and Lefty once again. Tiger shot 66-69 on the weekend to beat Mickelson by one shot again.

At the 2002 U.S. Open at Bethpage, Woods was in the process of winning the second of his three titles at the event. Meanwhile, Mickelson would be the runner-up at the event, something he ended up doing six times. Tiger topped Phil by three shots that week in New York.

The fourth occasion when Lefty would end up as a runner-up to Woods came in 2005 in the Ford Championship at the Blue Monster at Doral. Mickelson did everything he could do, shooting 23-under par, only to come up one shot short of Woods yet again.
