2021 The American Express: Top 10 power rankings
Patrick Cantlay is back at The American Express for the first time since 2013. It didn’t go well for him when he missed the cut, but he’s done plenty well for himself in the years to follow.
The former world No. 1 amateur has ascended into the top 10 as a pro. He’s got three PGA Tour wins, including one just last fall at the Zozo Championship in his home state of California.
The Long Beach native followed it up with T-17th at the Masters before hanging it up for 2020.
“I feel like I played well closing out the last year and my game feels really good,” Cantlay was transcribed by ASAP Sports at the Tournament of Champions, “it feels like it’s in a good spot and I got a good program for getting ready for events right now so I’m really looking forward to this year..”
Cantlay opened 2021 with three rounds in the 60s and all four under par en route to T-13th at the Tournament of Champions.
Cantlay has the type of well-rounded game that makes him a threat any week. Last season, he ranked 40th in driving distance (303.1) and was 23rd in strokes gained off the tee (.404). The former UCLA Bruin was 58th or better in each SG category.
Cantlay ranked 13th in scoring average (69.764)
Cantlay tends to play well on the West Coast Swing. We’ve seen at Pebble Beach and Riviera. Now we’ll see it at PGA West.
