2021 Farmers Insurance Open: Top 10 power rankings at Torrey Pines
Harris English was playing outstanding golf for months. It finally paid off with a win a few weeks ago at the Tournament of Champions. It was his third career PGA Tour victory and first since 2013.
It allowed him to reach his career apex in the Official World Golf Ranking at No. 16.
Prior to his win in Hawaii, the former Georgia Bulldog posted 12 top-26 finishes in 15 starts since play resumed in June. And that’s all after missing the cut in his first start back.
English, 31, has always had this kind of talent. It came in bursts early on as a pro before all but leaving in the mid 2010s. He’s worked his way back and is showing the type of talent, particularly ball striking, to compete week in and week out.
He’s got plenty of experience at Torrey Pines. English made seven of eight cuts at the Farmers Insurance Open and has played every year since 2012 except 2014.
English finished T-2nd in 2015. Scores of 68-66-73-72 made him the 36-hole leader and got him into a four-man playoff. Jason Day won and also outdueled Scott Stallings and J.B. Holmes.
The Sea Island resident followed with T-31st in 2016 (70-72-77-73), T-14th in 2017 (71-69-69-72) and T-8th in 2018 (70-68-73-71). With the type of form he’s in and a week off after the Hawaii swing to rest up, English is going to kick off his West Coast swing in style.
It can get cool and breezy a la Torrey Pines this week at Sea Island. Maybe some practice rounds at home will have him ready for this type of test.
English ranks 28th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee (.45) and 19th in SG putting (.773).
