Things were looking pretty bleak for Leish in the second half of 2020, but it appears the fun-loving Aussie is back in form.

He posted a pair of top-25s in the Hawaii swing. Finishing T-24th at the Tournament of Champions didn’t blow anyone out of the water, but T-4th at the Sony Open was his best result since he was rolling in pre-pandemic times.

It’s the type of form he showed early last year when he won the Farmers Insurance Open. Leishman fired 68-72-68-65 to come back from three shots behind Jon Rahm to begin Sunday.

He led the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open field in strokes gained putting (2.67) and was hitting greens from all over the place (1.57 SG approach, 5th).

“To win here where I’ve come close a couple times, I think I had two seconds before this week, it’s a place that I love coming to, yeah,” Leishman was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2020. “And on Australia Day, it’s pretty amazing.”

Like Leishman said, he was close to winning here before. In his second tournament appearance, he posted T-2nd (68-69-71-68) and came within a shot of Ben Crane in 2010.

Again in 2014, Leishman was a shot away in T-2nd (66-7172-71).

In total, the 37 year old has made nine of 11 cuts here in SoCal. He’s never skipped coming to La Jolla since earning his PGA Tour card in 2009.

He’s a great wind player and can hit the variety of shots needed to get it done in conditions expected for this week.
