2021 Farmers Insurance Open: Top 10 power rankings at Torrey Pines
Not all home games are created equal on the PGA Tour. Usually a guy playing where he grew up or where he currently resides is an advantage. Especially if it’s a home course scenario.
Schauffele grew up in La Jolla and was a stud at San Diego State. He competed at Torrey Pines between junior and high school golf several times.
This is also a course that favors big hitters and solid ball strikers. Schauffele isn’t at the top of the top for length, but he gets it out there just fine. It seems as if this venue should suit him well, but the results haven’t been there.
At least not yet.
He missed the cut in his first three appearances between 2016-18. He recovered to post T-25th in 2019 and while he MC’d again last year, it was only by a shot. Same goes for 2018.
Plus, Schauffele was playing in just his second career PGA Tour event when he showed up in 2016. We can cut him some slack there.
I’m not willing to give up on him at the Farmers Insurance Open. Perhaps a lack of fans this year will make this feel more like a normal event.
Schauffele brings great form into this event with a T-5th to kick off 2021 at the Tournament of Champions. It extends his top-25 streak to a whopping 13 events. Granted, several of those are limited field events, but it’s impressive nonetheless.
The main knock on the X Man is his winless drought since the 2019 Tournament of Champions over two years ago. He did have the low gross score at the Tour Championship last year, but that doesn’t give him a ton of consolation.
I’m not sure Schauffele will get over the hump here in southern California, but he’ll post his career best here at Torrey Pines.
