2021 Farmers Insurance Open: Top 10 power rankings at Torrey Pines
It’s hard to believe Matthew Wolff’s only won once in his first year and a half as a pro. He got it done very early in his career, taking the 2019 3M Open before he even had full status on the PGA Tour.
He then captivated us this summer at the majors where he contended for T-4th at the PGA Championship and again for solo second at the U.S. Open.
Yet again, he got in the mix to win on the PGA Tour this fall at the Shriners Open (T-2nd).
Wolff opened his 2021 campaign in his home state last week at The American Express. He was in danger of missing the cut with an opening 72 before rallying to make the cut (-4) by a shot with a 67. Wolff didn’t have the firepower to storm to the first page of the leaderboard on the weekend like Patrick Cantlay (T-2nd), but he continued to improve his standing.
Rounds of 71 and 70 netted him T-40th.
It was his first appearance since the Masters, so not a terrible showing in shaking off the rust.
The Agoura Hills native made a solid Farmers Insurance Open debut a year ago taking T-21st (76-66-71-69). After a woeful opening round at the South course, Wolff made hay on the North to make the cut and played the South about as well as anyone on the weekend.
Wolff’s going to need to avoid the foul balls to contend, but he’s got it in him when all cylinders are firing.
He’s ninth on the PGA Tour in driving distance (313.4) and 215th in driving accuracy (52.96%). Let’s meet somewhere in the middle, eh, Matt?
No one likes to play in cool, wet and windy conditions but some can withstand it better than others. Wolff’s crisp iron play ranks him seventh on the PGA Tour in strokes gained at 1.061.
