Patrick Reed has steadily improved at the Farmers Insurance Open over the last few years. The Texan debuted at this event in 2013 with a T-39th then didn’t come back until 2016 when he withdrew.

Team Reed took another year away from La Jolla’s coastal views before coming back in 2018 and posting T-23rd (68-72-72-73). In 2019, Reed was steady Eddy for T-13th with four rounds in red figures (69-69-69-70).

Last year, Reed took T-6th (69-69-70-70) and was in contention throughout the tournament until Marc Leishman separated on Sunday with a 65. Reed was fourth in the field in strokes gained approach (1.64) and second in putts per green in regulation (1.642).

Reed is looking to bounce back from a rare missed cut last week at The American Express. It snapped a streak of eight in a row worldwide dating back to July. He’s only missed six since the start of 2019.

Reed is on an early pace in 2020-21 to finish in the top 12 on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting for the third time in the last five seasons. He’s currently third at 1.235.

The 30 year old has already done about everything in golf: win a WGC, FedEx Cup Playoffs event, major and star on a Ryder Cup team. He has eight PGA Tour wins but a rare feather he lacks in the cap is a win on the West Coast swing.

Difficult, U.S. Open like conditions are right up Reed’s alley this week. I wouldn’t be surprised to be wearing short sleeves in 55 degree weather walking up the 18th fairway with a two-shot lead at 5-under.
