2022 PGA Championship will be played at Southern Hills
Not that long ago, the PGA announced that the 2022 PGA Championship was being pulled from Trump Bedminster, and a new location would be announced at a later date.
Well, that date is now here, and we have a new location, albeit one that has seen the PGA Championship from time to time.
Southern Hills is the new host of the 2022 PGA Championship.
We are still quite a ways from the event happening, as it won’t be until May of 2022. It is nice to know where it is going to be after just a two-week period of unknown.
It’s odd as well as difficult for the course to have the announcement be made with such short notice. There is a lot of planning that normally goes on, which is why they are awarded so far ahead of time. Remember, this decision was originally made in 2014, awarding Trump Bedminster a major that was eight years away from happening.
There is a bright spot though, and that is that the Senior Open is actually going to be played there in 2021. It will help already having a team in place, and an idea of how they want to set the course up, as well as the conditions that they will be dealing with.
This will make it 15 years in between majors at Southern Hills, as the 2007 PGA championship was the last PGA Tour major that was held there. It was won by none other than the GOAT, Tiger Woods. After shooting +1 the first day, Woods came out and shot an incredible 63 (-7), to take the lead at -6 by a stroke. Woods never relinquished the lead and would win by two strokes.
This will be the sixth time that Southern Hills has hosted the PGA Championship. Other than the year Woods won, Retief Goosen won in 2001, Nick Price in 1994, Hubert Green in 1977, and Tommy Bolt in 1958.

For anyone that was worried things were going to be a little rough or uncertain heading into next year’s PGA Championship, have no worried. A new course in Southern Hills has been found, and things should be as smooth as you could expect in this situation as we approach the 2022 PGA Championship.
