After the opening round, two men sit atop the leaderboard. Alex Noren and Patrick Reed share the top spot of the Farmers Insurance after 18 holes.

It’s easy to dislike someone when they have the combo of being a great player and doing despicable things. If they weren’t any good, we wouldn’t pay attention to them. Yet, with Patrick Reed, it seems like for every unsportsmanlike thing that he does, all it does is make him a better golfer.

He played flawlessly on Thursday, carding eight birdies and ten pars while playing on the North Course (that’s how the PGA Leaderboard designates it at least), taking advantage of his start on the “easier” course.

I say easier because of the top 31 golfers, only four of them played on the “South Course”. Peter Malnati is at -6, as is Ryan Palmer. Lucas Glover and Rory McIlroy both sit at -4. Could you argue that their scores are more impressive? Let’s wait until the completion of the second round to see how people score there today.

Alex Noren sits alongside Patrick Reed at the top of the Farmers Insurance leaderboard at -8.

Alex Noren wasn’t able to card a flawless round like Patrick Reed did, but he managed something that Reed couldn’t, which was an eagle. Although, he did waste the eagle by bogeying the next hole. It was still enough to put him alongside Reed, as they each sit one shot up on Scottie Scheffler, who is looking to bounce back after missing the cut last week.

Peter Malnati had every chance to sit there at -8 alongside the two leaders, as he carded seven birdies and an eagle just like Noren. The South Course is a bit tougher though, and he ended with three bogeys on his card. He did finish with his eagle on 18, making a 16-footer.

Ryan Palmer’s round was much less interesting, as he would find seven birdies and a bogey on his way to tying Malnati for the best round on the South Course.
