Farmers Insurance Open: Winners and Losers from Torrey Pines

Each week on the PGA Tour, there are players who do better than expected and those who fall short of expectations. Here are Pro Golf Now, we call them winners and losers. Here are this week’s winners and losers from the American Express.

Winners

Patrick Reed – He put aside the controversy from an embedded ball ruling on Saturday to fend off a very tough field on Sunday. Reed earned his ninth PGA Tour win by claiming the title at Torrey Pines against some of the world’s best players.

Viktor Hovland – Trying for his third PGA Tour win, Hovland came up just short of Patrick Reed and settled for a T2. Still, the young Norwegian keeps showing how special of a player he already is.

Rory Sabbatini – Everyone expected Rory to make a run on Sunday. They just didn’t realize that it would be Rory Sabbatini rather than Rory McIlroy. Sabbatini finished T10.

Tony Finau – I guess it’s a matter of whether the glass is half full or half empty. Finau keeps finishing inside the Top 10 on tour, he just doesn’t win. This week, his T2 marks four Top 10s already this season, and Finau has 36 Top 10s since his only tour win. He’s making a lot of money, even without winning.

Henrik Norlander – When Norlander makes the cut, he does very well. This season alone, Norlander has six missed cuts. But when he has made the cut, he now has a T2, a T4, a T12 and a T58. His T2 this week ties his best career finish.

Losers

Scottie Scheffler – He shot 65 on Thursday to sit one shot off the lead. However, he followed that with a 79 on Friday to miss the cut. That’s not how you get it done on the PGA Tour.

Brooks Koepka – The story here isn’t that Koepka missed the cut at Torrey Pines. The story is that he has now missed three cuts in a row. Whether he’s injured or just not playing well, Koepka needs to get his game fixed.

Jordan Spieth – Things looked pretty good for Spieth when he shot 69 on Thursday. However, his 75 on Friday left him home for the weekend again. The mystery of Spieth continues to grow.

Beau Hossler – Hossler shot 66 on Thursday but followed that with a 78 on Friday to miss the cut. This week marks five straight missed cuts for the 25-year-old.

Cameron Champ – He shot 68 on Thursday with a solid round of play. But he followed that with a 79 on Friday to miss the cut. For a rising star like Champ, this is not a good result.
