2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Scottsdale
Will Zalatoris continues to squeeze the most out of every opportunity he gets. Under non-pandemic times, he would have already had his PGA Tour card after he blistered the Korn Ferry Tour in 2019 and 2020.
Instead, both the KFT and PGA Tour seasons have been extended with new membership cards not being granted until the start of the 2021-2022 campaigns. Fortunately for Zalatoris, his strong play on PGA Tour sponsor exemptions has earned him Special Temporary membership.
That means he can accept unlimited sponsor exemptions, like he did for this week in his debut at the Phoenix Open. He didn’t end up needing the exemption as his play last week at the Farmers Insurance Open earned him in this week via the top-10 rule.
Zalatoris was the only player at Torrey Pines in red figures all four rounds with scores of 68-71-70-71 to finish T-7th.
According to Justin Ray of 15th Club, that was his 14th worldwide top-10 finish since the start of 2020, the most of any player.
Four of the 14 came on the PGA Tour in just seven starts. Last week was his tournament debut and first competition in nearly two months.
He finished 40th or higher in all strokes gained categories in stats kept at the South course. That includes 10th in SG around the green (.889).
Albeit in just 13 measured rounds, the 24-year-old Wake Forest alum ranks 15th on the PGA Tour in SG off the tee (.59) and is fifth in SG approach (1.062).
Zalatoris should be in the groove for another debut at TPC Scottsdale.
