Golf’s young iron man is unsurprisingly making his fifth start already in 2021. All in all, the 22-year-old South Korean’s played well.

Sungjae Im opened the year with T-5th at the Tournament of Champions where he posted four rounds in the 60s. There was a cut in each of the next three events and Im played the weekend each time.

That includes another high finish at The American Express (T-12) and a couple good rounds en route to T-32 at the Farmers Insurance Open. Im’s had a nice ball striking season (20th in strokes gained off the tee, 52nd in SG approach), but his short game and putter have lagged behind. It was nice to see Sungjae get the flat stick rolling last week as three rounds at Torrey Pines’ South Course resulted in .92 SG per round, good for 27th.

If he can build on that this week on Bermuda, his ball striking should improve from last week on a more forgiving layout.

His lone PGA Tour win came on Bermuda at the 2020 Honda Classic.

This is Im’s third Phoenix Open appearance. He debuted at TPC Scottsdale in 2019 with T-7th (69-68-67-69). His return in 2020 ended in T-34th (66-72-68-70h).

Im scrambled well here last year, finishing T-8th in sand saves (80%) and 11th in scrambling (73.91%).

It’s hard to win the Phoenix Open without a lot of birdies. Im ranks 25th (4.52 per round) in that category and is 43rd in par-5 scoring (4.54).
