2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Scottsdale
Three starts and three top-20s for Xander Schauffele at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. It’s emblematic of the high-end consistency Schauffele shows throughout the year.
The Californian comes to the Phoenix Open riding a streak of 14 straight top-25s.
More relavant for this week is the fact that the X Man’s kicked off his 2021 by finishing T-5th at the Tournament of Champions and T-2nd last week at the Farmers Insurance Open.
To be fair, Schauffele really didn’t contend at either event for his first win since January 2019. On the flip side, that was far and away his best result in his native La Jolla and had to have gotten a monkey off his back.
The 27 year old tied for the lowest score at the South Course. He ranked top 10 in the field in strokes gained approach (1.17) and SG putting (1.26).
Now he’s at TPC Scottsdale where he’s gone T-17th (68-67-66-72) in 2018, T-10th (67-72-67-68) in 2019 and T-16th (67-67-66-74) in 2020. A strong Sunday round could have had him in the mix in 2017 and 2020.
The former San Diego State Aztec ranks inside the top 36 in all strokes gained categories for the season. There’s no course type, grass type or caliber of player he can’t beat. It’s all about closing strong on Sunday, because it’s almost assured he’ll be around the lead.
This is a good event for him to try to get over the hump and nab his fifth career PGA Tour victory.
