2021 Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Top 10 power rankings
It’s been three years since Jason Day’s won on the PGA Tour, but one of his closest calls came right here at Pebble Beach in 2020.
The Aussie nearly earned his 13th career win with rounds of 67-64-70-65 on the way to solo fourth place. That final round was a disaster, but he still would have needed a 67 in tough conditions to reach a playoff with Nick Taylor.
It doesn’t matter what type of form Day is in coming to the Pebble Beach Pro-Am because he’s a horse for the course. Much like it’s hard to believe he hasn’t won since the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship, it’s crazy that Day hasn’t won at this venue.
In 11 Pro-Am starts, Day has seven(!) top-10s that includes T-2nd (69-65-69-70) in 2018. He continued with T-4th (65-69-72-68) in 2019 and T-21st (70-73-70-69) that summer at the U.S. Open.
Day does play well at Monterey Peninsula, which is not in this year’s rotation, though he’s clearly acquitted himself just fine at Pebble and Spyglass Hill.
“I feel very comfortable here. I obviously love the golf courses here,” Day was transcribed last year by ASAP Sports. “I’ve always played well at Monterey Peninsula. And Pebble’s always been one of my favorite golf courses to play. This is a really neat experience, especially when we have nice weather like this (in 2020).”
Day comes in off two missed cuts each of the last two weeks. He’s still not far from the promising form he showed at the end of 2021. He earned T-7th at the Houston Open and T-12th at the RSM Classic.
Health is always a concern for the 33 year old, particularly with his back. Assuming he’s got no ailments, I attribute his slow start to shaking off the rust from not competing since November.
I like Day to get back on the horse this week and perhaps build up some early Masters dark horse buzz.
