Can we just give Will Zalatoris a PGA Tour card by now? Playing on special temporary status that allows him to accept unlimited sponsors exemptions, Zalatoris lit it up again last week at the Phoenix Open.

Scores of 71-66-64-71 earned him T-17th. Going from the cut line after round one to contending going into Sunday was impressive. His iron play bodes well for this week at Pebble Beach.

The Wake Forest product ranked 10th in the field in Phoenix in strokes gained approach (1.15). That bumped him up to fourth (1.084) on the PGA Tour this season.

The Texan can hit it a mile (12th, 312.9 yards), which can help reaching the par-5s in two.

Zalatoris has missed just one cut in his last eight events on the PGA Tour. He famously tied for sixth at the U.S. Open as part of four top-10s in the span. His best effort was T-5th at the Shriners Open.

This will be his Pebble Beach Pro-Am debut.

Zalatoris just broke into the top 50 in the world for the first time. That’s huge for getting into majors, World Golf Championships, etc. Not bad for someone who’s still technically a Korn Ferry Tour member.

“…six months ago I — if you think of it actually you go back farther. I probably wouldn’t have played the (U.S.) Open if COVID didn’t happen. Probably wouldn’t have tried to qualify just because it would’ve been during the week of a Korn Ferry event and would’ve put all my focus on the Korn Ferry Tour,” Zalatoris was transcribed by ASAP Sports on Saturday at the Phoenix Open. “I made the most of it and been making the most of it ever since. Like I said, just kind of playing with house money. Obviously playing in WGCs and everything would be great, but if anything I want to be in that FedExCup by the end of the year.”
