Genesis Invitational: Top 10 power rankings at Riviera
Jon Rahm made his debut at Riviera in 2019. Most 20-somethings seeing a course for the first time would be happy just to make the cut. Maybe post a top-25.
Rahm is a different cat. He finished T-9th (67-70-69-71), posting one of his myriad top-10s around the world. He followed it up by taking T-17th (70-68-69-72) in 2020. The Spaniard was in the mix on a bunched leaderboard going into Sunday where he settled for a 1-over final round.
Rahm overcame a so-so ball striking week to finish fifth in the field in strokes gained putting (1.606) and did not make a double bogey or worse. Getting up and down out of the sand four out of five times and scrambling over 70% helps.
Riviera seems like a good course for JR. While it calls for precision at times, there are holes where he can use his length to get on par-5s in two and could make some hay on the famed drivable par-4 10th.
Rahm comes to the Genesis Invitational off of a week of rest following T-13th at the Phoenix Open near his old stomping grounds at Arizona State. The 26 year old has 10 straight top-25 finishes including a win at the BMW Championship and T-2nd at the Zozo Championship.
He’s also made 10 cuts in a row worldwide.
Rahm ranks fifth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee (.825) and 10th in par-5 scoring (4.43).
He’s won twice before in California at The American Express and Farmers Insurance Open.
