Genesis Invitational: Top 10 power rankings at Riviera
It’s a surprise when Justin Thomas misses a cut anywhere. It was especially the case at the 2020 Genesis Invitational.
Not only is it a smaller field of 120 to contend with, but JT was trending well at Riviera.
The former Alabama Crimson Tide played the weekend all five times at this event from 2015-19. Thomas cracked the top 10 for the first time with T-9th (69-71-67-70) in 2018 and solo second (66-65-65-75) in 2019.
Perhaps that Sunday collapse in the wind in 2019 where he was the 54-hole leader by four stuck with him in 2020 when he MC’d.
To be fair, Thomas was only two off the cut line and shot even par 71 on Friday.
He’s a chameleon who can win anywhere on the schedule. That said, Riviera is among the better fits stylistically for his game.
“It’s a ball-strikers course, that’s why I played it well,” Thomas was transcribed in 2020 by Tee Scripts. “It’s a strength of my game, but you just have to have control of your ball”
Thomas has missed just two cuts worldwide since the 2020 Genesis Invitational and only one on the PGA Tour (2020 Travelers Championship).
The 27-year-old Kentuckian is in the top third on Tour in all strokes gained categories, including 15th on approach (.81), 17th around the green (.394), 19th in putting (.711) and 11th tee to green (1.398).
Thomas comes in off a week of rest following a T-13th at the Phoenix Open.
