Genesis Invitational: Top 10 power rankings at Riviera
I said going into last week’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am that I was willing to forgive a missed cut. Daniel Berger had been piling up high finishes all the way back since last summer until he a hit a bump in the road at the Phoenix Open where he missed the weekend by one shot.
It seemed like an anomaly.
What did he do after? Make two eagles as part of a Sunday 65 for a comeback win at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The long eagle putt on 18 was a memorable way to close it out.
“I’m just trying to get better in every aspect of my game and I feel like I’ve accomplished that, and I’ve set some really high goals and I feel like I’m not scared to put in the work,” Berger was transcribed by ASAP Sports. “I’m not the most talented guy out here. I don’t hit it the furthest, but I’ll outwork anybody. So that’s where I think, that is my biggest weapon.”
Berger is poised to make the American Ryder Cup team this fall and is playing remarkably consistent golf. His streak of 26 rounds of par or better leads the PGA Tour.
Just like I was willing to forgive a missed cut in Phoenix is why I’m willing to overlook a couple at Riviera to keep Berger high in this week’s rankings.
Berger’s played the Genesis Invitational twice, missing the weekend in 2016 and 2018.
He’s clearly a transformed player since then. Berger has the longest active streak on the PGA Tour of rounds of par or better with 26.
Berger kicked off his 2021 with a pair of top-10s in Hawaii. The former Florida State Seminole has been inside the top 34 in all but one event in the 2020-21 season.
Berger ranks 15th in strokes gained putting (.733), 17th in par-5 scoring (4.48) and 10th in par breakers (27.04%).
