Head, meet wall. It’s likely Tony Finau’s banged his cranium against some drywall at some point over the last month.

The uber talented yet cursed golfer finished in second place in his third straight start. The quest for his first PGA Tour win since 2016 continues.

No one was talking about Finau going into the final round last week at the Genesis Invitational. He was having a solid tournament beginning with 71-67-70 but was several shots back on a crowded, talented leaderboard.

Then he went out and shot the round of the day, 7-under 64. It took Max Homa missing a 3-footer to get into a playoff. Might the cards finally be shaking Finau’s way?

Unfortunately for him, they weren’t. The 31-year-old Utahan was in prime position on the first playoff hole just off the green on the par-4 10th while Homa’s ball was up against a tree.

Finau predictably missed from inside 10 feet while Homa comfortably made par to extend. Finau was in the bunker onthe next hole, the par-3 14th, and could not get up and down to beat Homa’s comfortable par.

Finau also finished T-2nd in 2021 at the Farmers Insurance Open and a week later on the European Tour at the Saudi International.

Big credit goes to Finau who faces the music after every round and gives thoughtful answers. Here’s to hoping he can stay positive like he has.

“I shot 64 today on a day where I needed to just to get into the playoff. I think as I look back on the week in the next couple days there’s going to be a lot to grow from,” Finau was transcribed by Tee Scripts. “Today’s round was pretty special. I was able to make some key putts in regulation just to keep myself in it. Yeah, you know, I fell short, but I take a lot of positives.”

Finau has 37 top-10s since he last won, more than double anyone else.

What was encouraging on Sunday was Finau’s performance on the greens. That’s usually what trips him up, but he was second in the field in strokes gained putting (3.042).

Finau also led the field in strokes gained tee to green (2.59).

It’ll be another good week to game Finau in your DFS lineup. The Concession is a big ballpark with some room to maneuver.

I think he gets back on the horse and contends, but he’ll be overcome by the world No. 1.
