It’s boring to rank Dustin Johnson No. 1 seemingly every time he tees it up. But I’m not going to disrespect the man if he’s in good form.

Playing the weekend in 71-72 to fade from contention last week at the Genesis Invitational was disappointing, but he still managed a T-8th finish against a tough field with arguably his ‘C’ game.

Johnson opened the tournament with two rounds in the 60s. A middling putting week and a wayward driver spoiled a good iron week (14th, 1.08 strokes gained) and a reliable short game (10th, .661).

The South Carolinian has won twice in his last four worldwide starts and three times in the last nine going back to August.

Johnson ran away for victory at the 2020 Masters before taking a well deserved winter break. He showed up without much practice at the Tournament of Champions and still took T-11th.

Johnson won against some big names at the European Tour’s Saudi International. I really liked his chances to do some damage at Pebble Beach, but he opted to rest the week after Saudi.

One of DJ’s 24 career PGA Tour wins came in Florida: The 2015 WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral. The Coastal Carolina University alum finished T-5th (Players) and T-6th (Valspar) in his last two starts in the Sunshine State in 2019.

This looks like a target golf type of week. If that’s the case, no one has been more dialed in with their irons this season. Johnson leads the PGA Tour in strokes gained approach (1.214). It’s a big reason why he’s also first in scoring average (68.459).

With players having little to no reps at The Concession Golf Club leading in, one would think pure talent has a better shot to win out this week. The most talented man is Dustin Johnson.
