Fortunately for Justin Thomas, he wasn’t the only big name to miss the cut last week at the Genesis Open. JT, DeChambeau and McIlroy were just a few to be caught in Riviera’s snare.

It’s easy to overreact to one bad week, but I doubt any sort of tailspin is on the way for Thomas.

This was just the 27 year old’s second missed cut since July.

In 2021, he earned solo third at the Tournament of Champions and T-13th at the Phoenix Open.

Thomas is the type of player who thrives on traditional parkland style layouts like The Concession Golf Club. He’s as dialed in with his yardages as any. It’s demonstrated by his 16th ranking on the PGA Tour in strokes gained approach (.705).

The former Alabama Crimson Tide’s lethality ramps up from close range. He’s in the top 17 from all yardage categories between 50-125 yards, 125-150 and 150-175.

If it’s a birdie fest, that also favors Thomas. He’s first on Tour with 5.17 birdies per round and is sixth in scoring average at 69.716.

The 12-time PGA Tour winner has done well on Bermuda greens, winning on this surface in Malaysia, Memphis and Palm Beach Gardens to name a few.

Thomas is a one-time major champ at the 2017 PGA Championship and also has fared well at the World Golf Championships. A win at the WGC-Workday Championship at The Concession would be his third WGC trophy. Thomas got it done at the old Bridgestone Invitational in 2018 and his most recent win of any kind, the 2020 FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

JT also was solo second at the 2020 WGC-Mexico Championship. While he won’t be able to go back to Club de Chapultepec where he’s fired plenty of low rounds, I imagine he’ll enjoy the short trip to Bradenton from his residence in Jupiter.
