Usually, nearly the entire PGA Tour leaves the States during this week to play in either the WGC Mexico event or the Puerto Rico Open. The Puerto Rico Open is still happening, but the top-level players will be heading to The Concession in Florida to play the WGC Workday.

You will likely notice a bit of a somber mood after the horrific accident of Tiger Woods yesterday. Luckily for him and his family, he sounds to be recovering from successful surgery after the incident.

For many, sports can be a way to escape what is going on in the outside world, even if it’s just for a moment in time.

Here are the staff picks to win the WGC Workday Championship.

Patrick Reed

Joey McCusker

Michael Ellis – My pick this week is everyone’s favorite golf villain, Patrick Reed. Reed comes into this event in great form, looking to defend his title. Reed seems to play up to his competition and the field is extremely strong this week, headlined by World #1, Dustin Johnson. Look for Reed to rely on his world-class putting this week at Concession and notch his second win of the season.

Patrick Cantlay

Kasey Kuhrts

Tony Finau

Chris O’Day – I’m ready to be hurt again. I love watching Tony Finau play, and there are few things in golf that would make me happier than seeing him win again. The only reason I wasn’t upset (just mildly agitated instead) last week after his playoff loss was that I had picked Max Homa to win at the Genesis. I think this is a big character week for Finau. Seeing how he responds to another close call will speak volumes. My guess? He either contends once again, finishing in the top five at the WGC Workday or he shoots over par. Nothing in between.

Bill Felber – I’m going way out on a limb this week and taking Tony Finau. My pick is based on the belief that fate can’t possibly be that cruel that consistently.

Jon Rahm

Josh Chandler – In a bit from his article earlier this week…

“Jon has had success on Jack Nicklaus designed courses previously including a win at the Memorial last year and a runner-up finish at last year’s ZOZO championship held at Sherwood Country Club.

I like that Rahm is one of several players to have seen this week’s course before as well having been part of the 2015 NCAA golf championship that was held at The Concession. A strong finish on Sunday, brief history at this course, and success at Jack Nicklaus designed courses, are all factors as to why Jon is the second favorite in this field, and why I am starting my card with the World number two this week at the WGC Workday Championship.”

Tim Letcher – Xander Schauffele? Tony Finau? Oh wait, neither of them ever win. So let’s go with Jon Rahm, who finished T5 last week at Riviera.

Hans Geevers – I was impressed with his final round performance at the Genesis Invitational. I expect Rahm to bring positive momentum into this week’s WGC event.

Webb Simpson

Kathy Bissell – It’s a good week for bermudagrass guys like Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Daniel Berger, Billy Horschel, Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson, and even Rory McIlroy because he’s had a lot of practice on it now living in the Jupiter area. Even Viktor Hovland, playing out of Stillwater, OK, is going to have plenty of bermudagrass experience. Even Jon Rahm gets some practice on it in AZ in the summertime. It’s just a really different turf. A Kevin Kisner wouldn’t surprise.

I’m not looking up where everybody lives for a pick, but all this leads me to Webb Simpson.

Dustin Johnson

Mike Randleman – From his fantastic weekly power rankings

“One of DJ’s 24 career PGA Tour wins came in Florida: The 2015 WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral. The Coastal Carolina University alum finished T-5th (Players) and T-6th (Valspar) in his last two starts in the Sunshine State in 2019. This looks like a target golf type of week. If that’s the case, no one has been more dialed in with their irons this season. Johnson leads the PGA Tour in strokes gained approach (1.214). It’s a big reason why he’s also first in scoring average (68.459).”

West Valentine – I hate to be boring, but Dustin Johnson is my pick this week. He had a great run at Riviera, a course that rewards finesse over power. DJ showed he has both and I suspect a little more room to unleash the driver will help him this week at Concession.

DJ Cadden

Xander Schauffele

Richie Randolph

Adam Scott

Dalton Finkbeiner – Adam Scott has had a decent start to his 2021 season and he has had a ton of success in Florida. Two of his last three PGA Tour wins have come in the Sunshine State, including the 2016 WGC Championship at Doral, the last year it was played in Florida before moving to Mexico. With not a lot of information on how Concession will play this week, Doral may be a good comparable. He is solid tee to green and although I’m not a fan of the long putter, he does roll it pretty well when he gets hot.

Best of luck to everyone at the WGC Workday this week in Florida. Stay safe my friends.
