Something is wrong with Matthew Wolff. More evidence presented itself today during the first round of the WGC Workday.

It isn’t often that you can card two birdies through your first 11 holes… and still, be at +12. Do you know who is supposed to do that? Handicappers in the teens. Not professional golfers.

Heck, I’m about a seven handicap, and I wouldn’t be happy with a start like that.

It’s more than just his play to start the WGC Workday though. Matthew Wolff has had some terrible rounds this year.

He has six rounds of 75 or worse over his last eight tournaments. That isn’t even including the 75 at the US Open, but that’s because that whole tournament was insanely tough.

He had a 77 last week in the third round of the Genesis, which was a tough day but was still over three shots worse than the average score for the field. At the Farmers, he withdrew from the tournament after a 78 to open. He missed the cut at the Masters after a 70-77 start, with a 75 at the Zozo before that, and both an 80 and a 77 at the CJ Cup the week prior.

There’s got to be something wrong with either his swing or his mindset. Anyone posting scores like this can’t be comfortable with their game.

Take a look at some of the holes that he played today, and you get a sense of what I’m talking about. Mind you, he was +12 through 11 when I started putting this together.

Starting on the back nine, he was more than 25 yards short on the par-3 11th hole. Clearly a mis-hit. He then SHANKED it, hoseling it to the right, arguably not even passing over the green in there, and was still 20 yards away, before saving bogey with an up-and-down chip.

He went DEEP into the trees on 12, and had to hit nearly 100 yards back and to the side to get into the fairway and made another bogey.

If you think those are bad, the first real disaster struck on the next hole. He was short right on his approach into the par-5 and had to take a penalty. Then, he launched it over the green, not once, but twice, by 25+ each time, making a double. +4 through four holes.

After seeming to get back on track after hitting the par-3 green and two-putting for par, his worst hole of the day would show up.

Water. Penalty. Bunker. Chunk. Bunker. Green, and a two-putt from four feet for a Quad.

Maybe he likes the water? Cause he did it again on the next hole and would make a double there. What’s crazy though? He would BIRDIE the next two holes, and sit at +8 through nine holes.

Guess what though? Let’s go ahead and waste those birdies because the tee shot on the first hole (his tenth) would go into the penalty area, and he would have to drop. He would then three-putt from just 19 feet for a Triple bogey. He got into trouble on 11 once again but managed just a bogey this time.

Through 11 holes, here is what the card looked like. Two birdies, two pars, three bogeys, two doubles, one triple, and one quad. It hurts just reading that.

Next. Dominance: The best of Tiger Woods. dark

He would at least par the 12th, and sits at +12 through 12, with six holes left to play. Matthew Wolff seems to be falling apart over the last few months, and the youngster needs to figure out what is going on. The one thing we know for sure is that his game doesn’t look good right now.
