Patrick Reed hasn’t had sterling success at the Players Championship. But as we know, if anyone can find a way to somehow pull himself out of a precarious situation, it’s our guy, P.

Reed has made a respectable four of six cuts at TPC Sawgrass, all of which were inside the top 50. That includes made cut in his last three led by T-22nd (72-73-74-69) in 2017.

His performance in 2020-21 is the lead indicator of why he’s in this week’s power rankings. If tournament history shows us anything, who’s playing well in the given moment can often outweigh past course performance.

Reed’s already a winner in 2021 at the Farmers Insurance Open. Despite his run-in with #Embedgate, it’s tough to argue anyone else played better than him at Torrey Pines.

The Texan’s piled up six top-21s in nine PGA Tour events this season, as well as a T-3rd to close 2020 on the European Tour.

Reed is coming off a missed cut last week at Bay Hill, albeit by one shot. In fact, a glitch on the leaderboard on the PGA Tour app briefly listed Reed’s name above the cut line for some reason. There’s always something with this guy!

It was just his second missed cut going back to July.

The nine-time PGA Tour winner picked up one of those in Florida at the 2014 WGC-Cadillac Championship.

Reed ranks second on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting (1.133). He’s way down at 186th in driving distance, but that’s not as big a factor this week.

When he has scoring clubs in his hands like he will this week, Reed is lethal. He’s second at 4.96 birdies per round.
