2021 Players Championship: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Sawgrass
Bryson DeChambeau used his power to bring another course to its knees last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The big golfer fired 67-71-68-71 to fend off Lee Westwood by one at Bay Hill.
Twelve straight pars to close on Sunday showed that despite the volatility he displays from shot to shot, the results stay consistent.
Of surprise to no one, DeChambeau led the field in strokes gained off the tee (7.042 total). He also was tops in driving distance (321.3 yards) and longest drive (377).
His putter was a big detriment early in his career as he fiddled with grips. Now, it’s arguably his best weapon after the driver. He finished 21st in the field in SG putting (2.747 total) and was good in the clutch, gaining 2.235 strokes on the greens on Sunday.
Even when his wedge game gets squirrelly, Bryson’s still tough to beat.
“I think I’ll remember today, the final round and persevering through a very difficult day where I didn’t have my best golf swing out there,” DeChambeau was transcribed by ASAP Sports.
It was DeChambeau’s eighth PGA Tour victory by age 27. He continues on a stellar run of golf dating back to last summer when his bulk-up began. The apex, of course, was the U.S. Open win in September at Winged Foot.
The former SMU Mustang is making his third Players Championship start. He’s got a solid resume for a newcomer to a Pete Dye layout, taking T-37th (70-67-73-71) in 2018 and T-20th (70-69-69-71) in 2019. DeChambeau posted 70 in the round last year while holing everything inside 10 feet.
DeChambeau is first on the PGA Tour this season in SG off the tee (2.083), driving distance (323.5), and holes per eagle (52).
His win at Bay Hill was his first top-five of 2021, though three top-25s worldwide in four prior starts showed he was close to breaking through.
